The Art Garage Vallejo

The Art Garage Vallejo
In 2009 I started The Art Garage Vallejo. I was using my garage as my art studio and the kids next door began coming over to work with me. We would leave the garage door open and more kids from our neighborhood started dropping in to draw, paint, and make sculpture with us. I was inspired by the kids artwork and we enjoyed doing art and hanging out together. Check out theartgarage.jimdo.com and The Art Garage Vallejo on Facebook to learn more.

Vallejo Teaching Artists

I have been teaching Visual Arts to middle school students in the Vallejo Unified School District with VTA since 2018. VTA ia a nonprofit teaching a wide array of arts disciplines to middle school youth in the Bay Area. Learn more at VallejoTeachingArtists.org and Vallejo Teaching Artists on Facebook.

Vallejo Teaching Artists (VTA) began at Vallejo Charter School (VCS), a dependent charter school. It was created by parents interested in expanding the educational opportunities for children in Vallejo. The school adopted a project-based learning model in partnership with EL Education. As a part of this curriculum, art plays an important and integrative role. School administration worked hard to find and bring professional artists into the school to enrich the learning community. Initially, the artists offered dance and visual art, but the program soon grew! The teaching artists offered students visual art, dance, music, creative writing, cinematography, graphic design, and theatre lessons. They gave students opportunities to experiment with mediums, express their artistic voices, share their work with authentic audiences and connect to their academic work in a meaningful way.

Drums and Guitar for Consumer Music

This was a project put on by our local music store, Consumer Music. They made unusable instruments available to artists to transform in any way they chose. The final products were combined into a permanent display, many hung from the ceiling, in their store.

Vallejo in Motion Multimedia Exhibition

I contributed this video of photos to the 2018 Vallejo in Motion multimedia exhibition curated by Veronica Shimanovskaya. The exhibit featured video installations shown inside an abandoned ammunitions storage warehouse on Mare Island.

Wisdom Art Resistance

Wisdom Art Resistance was an art exhibit honoring local women artists held at the much loved Artiszen Gallery in Vallejo CA. I created this video collage for the show.
